Also, I am sure you found some, but awhile back you asked if we knew where to get baby tights. It may be weird for a boy, but there are some thicker ones at Kmart for $4 or so. I like them because it keeps the baby warm, can be worn under pants, and cannot be pulled off like the socks can.
